Kayln & Joy: San Francisco City Hall Elopement

One year ago today, we were in San Francisco for SF Pride and a very special elopement.

Kayln and Joy were in the midst of planning a big wedding in their hometown of Denver, Colorado, when they realized all of the little decisions just didn't seem as important as their commitment. Who cares what color the napkins are? We just want to get married! They were already planning on going to San Francisco to walk in the Pride Parade, so they decided to kick off the weekend with a wedding at City Hall! We had the honor of being witnesses to their vows, and joining them in exploring San Francisco.

A few months later, Kayln and Joy gathered their friends and family for an "Engagement Party," and played this video:

What a fantastic surprise! I really love elopements because the whole day is so private and so precious - and with a quality wedding film, you can still share your wedding with family and friends back home.

How incredible that exactly one year later, the Supreme Court has made a historic ruling for marriage equality across the United States! What a fantastic anniversary gift! My heart swells when I read the words that Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote to sum up this historic decision:

No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.  As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves.  Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.  They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.

Celebrate love, today and every day!

The R2 Wedding: Kauai, Hawaii

We truly believe that every love story is an adventure, but this one takes the vegan cheesecake. Last year we experienced the most amazing love story unfolding on the island of Kauai, and I am so excited to share it with you!

Renee and Robin - also known as The R2 Studio - are brilliant photographers and an all-around incredible couple. Years ago, when it seemed impossible that they could ever celebrate their love openly with an official, legal wedding, they exchanged rings and promises on a beach in Hawaii. As the tides turned in favor of equality and love, they knew they wanted to return to Hawaii with their closest loved ones to declare their commitment in a wedding ceremony that exceeded their dreams.

If you've got 20 minutes and a few extra tissues, you should definitely start by watching Renee and Robin's Love Story Film FIRST. Featuring a helicopter ride over the Na Pali Coast, a surprise proposal, and reminiscing on seven years of falling in love. (or skip to the wedding film below)

After a full week of hanging out with the "R2 Ohana" and going on adventures, it was time for the main event. Renee and Robin decided to forego the typical beach wedding (nothing about these amazing women is typical or boring!) and instead got married in a taro field near Hanalei Bay, against a mountain backdrop that is unmistakably Kauai. The brides walked down the aisle to "Couldn't Love You More" by My Plastic Sun - played on the ukulele, of course - escorted by their son Austin.

I can tell you that Renee wasn't the only one crying during that ceremony! It was such an emotional moment to see this family publicly declaring their love and unity. The conch shell that you hear in the video was blown by a neighboring farmer, as a spontaneous show of support and celebration. He said that witnessing these two brides saying vows to each other was a beautiful thing, and in that moment he knew it was right.

The whole week we spent in Kauai was incredible, and we were so honored to be welcomed into this group of loving people who know the true meaning of ohana - family. Renee and Robin, thank you for bringing us into your ohana, and for allowing us to tell your amazing story! This was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure... and I'm sure you have many more ahead of you!

Thalita & Jack: Hard Rock Punta Cana Destination Wedding

How funny that we had to travel all the way to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, to meet Thalita and Jack, who live near us in Los Angeles! As soon as I read Jack's story of how he proposed in Palos Verdes, I knew this day was going to be full of laughter and heartfelt emotion. For these two, love isn't just a burning flame, it is a firework!

The Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana was the perfect setting for this celebration of love. The venue itself is luxurious, stylish, and made to party! Even a little rain couldn't dampen everyone's spirits, and merely mingled with the happy tears as Thalita and Jack exchanged vows in a gazebo with an ocean view.

Another incredible day working alongside Katya and Rob of Katya Nova Photography! It was a real treat to wake up with them for the sunrise rock-the-dress portraits on the beach... or more accurately, in the waves! (You all are fierce and fearless!!)

Thalita and Jack, thank you for welcoming us as friends to celebrate with you and document your wedding day! I'm sure that when it comes to your love story, the party is just beginning.

Please leave a comment of congratulations for this adventurous couple!

Denise & Hugo: Punta Cana Destination Wedding

The Dominican Republic is as close as I have come to everyone's dream-world tropical paradise. White sand beaches, warm turquoise water, perfect weather, and lots of places to sip drinks on the beach! It was the perfect location for Denise and Hugo to take the next step in their own personal adventure - exchanging vows at Dreams Punta Cana resort.

Denise and Hugo flew from Toronto to celebrate Caribbean-style with their close family and friends. I adore intimate destination weddings - everyone is able to take a vacation from the everyday and really celebrate love! We even got a chance to catch up with the bride and groom the day after their wedding for some portraits at the breathtaking Altos de Chavón near La Romana - a fairytale replica of a 16th century village and amphitheater.

Even with all the beautiful scenery, by far my favorite part of this wedding was the tangible, heartfelt emotion that was shared by everyone present. I often say that I love making people cry. ;) What I really mean: Pledging your forever love is a REALLY BIG DEAL with some very big and beautiful emotions attached to it. I truly love it when those emotions show in tears, smiles, laughter, and vows said in shaky voices. Love is real, love is big, and love is so present here, surrounding Denise and Hugo on this beautiful day.

Another highlight of this wedding was spending time with our dear friends Katya and Rob of Katya Nova Photography! We even got to return to Jellyfish Restaurant - the site of their wedding in 2012 - and experience the great food and "Crazy Hour" entertainment together! We had lots of adventures with Katya and Rob on this trip to the DR - keep an eye on the blog for more coming soon. ;)

Denise and Hugo, we loved every minute with you and  your loved ones. It was such a joy to celebrate with you, and we wish you every joy and blessing as you continue your adventures together!

Lindsay & Anders: Saddlerock Ranch Malibu Destination Wedding

I can think of no more perfect story to kick off this new Journal for The Adventures Of. When Alex at Sterling Engagements first contacted me about this wedding, she said the bride and groom were "super fun, kinda quirky" and had a fantastic story. That was a huge understatement.

Lindsay is from California. Anders is from Denmark. Each would describe the other as a "wild child" with extreme wanderlust and an adventurous spirit. They met at a wildlife sanctuary in Namibia, and have gone on to explore the world together. The incredible serendipity of their story led many guests to comment that day that we were witnessing the happy ending of a real life fairy tale. I think this is only the beginning of the downright magical adventures that these two are sure to have.

The sweeping views of the Malibu hills from Chateau le Dome at Saddlerock Ranch provided a breathtaking backdrop for a sweetly personalized ceremony. The groom's brother officiated over the union, which included some beautiful symbols of Lindsay's Jewish heritage (although when it came time to break the glass, somehow it was nowhere to be found!).

Tissue warning: These are some of the most moving vows I've ever heard! Are all Danish men this poetic, or is it just this lovely family?

The special traditions that surround weddings are always such a delight - between the hora, the Danish wedding waltz, and cutting the groom's socks and tie, this wedding was full of traditions that were celebrated with joy! Josh and I are so grateful to have been a part of such a joyous and personal celebration for such generous people. Lindsay and Anders, we wish you many many years of love and adventure to come!

P.S. I have to give a special mention of the soundtrack in this film. When I asked Lindsay about the type of music they listen to, she sent me a link to this awesome music video by Radical Face. I was so in love that I wrote to the artist and he was kind enough to let me license the song. Then Chris Bartels of Anthem Falls Music composed the perfect ambient track to tie it all together.
